Four Manchester restaurants have been named among the UK’s top 100 in a new list by SquareMeal.
The SquareMeal website says: “Each of the top 100 results are a unique combination of our own in-house critic-led opinions and thousands of diner votes. It’s this dual approach that makes our list incomparable, representing not only our professional opinion but thousands of real-life experiences that help to reinforce and bolster our final decisions.
“When we say this list is months in the making, we really mean it. We take huge care and pride in making sure only the very best in the industry find a place on the list, and have eaten at hundreds of restaurants over the past 12 months to whittle down the winners.”
Higher Ground features in the list and is the only Manchester restaurant to rank in the top 20.
The Sparrows placed 53rd, Erst takes the 69th spot and 10 Tib Lane sits in 99th place.

What did SquareMeal say about Higher Ground?
SquareMeal said Higher Ground has a “confident, creative and expertly crafted menu”.
It sets the scene, saying: “The laid-back British bistro and bar, from the team behind Ancoats’ critically acclaimed wine bar and bottle shop, Flawd, seats 50, with a dedicated walk-in wine room and a long strip of burnt orange leather counter seats offering a view of the open kitchen and charcoal oven as well as allowing interaction with the chefs.
“Pale wooden tables and dark leather seats give the rest of the dining room a neat, stripped back feel, with splashes of colour adding warmth.”
The restaurant was given a Gold Award by SquareMeal and visitors have praised it on Tripadvisor.
It has received a rating of 4 stars from 17 reviews.
One reviewer said: “Having recently been to some of the best restaurants in London Dubai and Qatar I can honestly say that the food, wine, staff and overall quality of higher ground far surpasses much more expensive destination restaurants.
“I would highly recommend you go for one of the best nights dining out you will ever have.”

Another wrote: “This restaurant is nothing but excellent from the second you walk in. The staff are welcoming, friendly, and really know their stuff about the food and wines. We sat at the counter and could see all of the chefs working their magic with passion for the food. Richard was accommodating to me being a coeliac without any fuss.
“We asked if they could suggest wines with each of the courses we were having from the tasting menu. Meg was exceptional with this request.
“We could not recommend this restaurant highly enough. Well done on doing a fantastic job in creating such a great place with a fabulous vibe. Definitely will go again”.
