As the warmth of summer finally beckons, I believe there is no better time to infuse your living spaces with the blissful serenity of the outdoors and in return, make the outdoors more welcoming.

Designing an indoor/outdoor space is more than just about aesthetics, it's about seamlessly blending two worlds to create a harmonious sanctuary. So, whether you're lounging on your sun-soaked patio or relaxing in the comfort of your living room, here are four key considerations to transform your space into a tranquil oasis.

Feel the flow

When designing an indoor/outdoor space, flow is paramount. Aim for a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors, blurring the lines between the two environments. Consider installing flush threshold, sliding glass doors or bi-fold doors that can be fully opened to create a fluid connection. Choose minimal frame thickness and large glass panes where possible, as this not only enhances natural light and unobstructed views but also encourages effortless movement between the two spaces.

Consider extending flooring materials, such as hardwood, wood effect tiles or natural stone, from indoors to the outdoor patio or deck. Duplicate potted plants and architectural greenery from the outdoor to inside blurring the boundaries between the two spaces. If you are building this space as new or renovating, then try to extend the roof line or add a pergola to extend the covered areas. This can also be the perfect way to add extra square footage to your home when you are entertaining.

Make furnishings fabulous

Take your time in choosing the right furniture. Selecting the appropriate furniture is crucial for maximising comfort and functionality in your indoor/outdoor area. Choose pieces that are weather-resistant and durable, yet stylish and inviting. Invest in quality outdoor sofas, loungers and dining sets crafted from materials such as powder-coated aluminium, wood, acrylic and natural stone. Think luxury holiday retreat and select a style outdoor that is synonymous with your interior style.

Select seating pieces that have deep cushioning and are beckoning you to begin your zen time. Incorporate plush cushions and throws to add warmth and cosiness, creating an inviting ambience for relaxation and entertaining. Ensure the fabrics you choose are stain-resistant so you can host without the added worry of spills. If your guests are amazed by the absolute weather and stain resistance of your outdoor furniture because it just looks so good, give yourself a pat on the back: You've officially achieved the look to perfection.

Go natural

Embrace natural elements and bring the outdoors in. Harness the beauty of nature by incorporating natural elements into your indoor design. Bring the outdoors in with organic textures, such as wooden accent pieces, woven rugs, and earthy organic textiles. Incorporate biophilic design principles by introducing elements like living walls and water features to your outside space to evoke a sense of tranquillity and a connection with the natural world.

Introduce earthy neutral tones, botanical prints, greens, blues and sunset shades and organic patterns into your interior décor to evoke the lush beauty of the outdoors. Incorporate natural materials and sculptural accessories indoors and outdoors to enhance your cohesive design scheme and harmonise both worlds.

Bask in the light

Harness light and air while trapping the warmth. Maximise natural light and ventilation to create a bright and airy atmosphere that evokes the feeling of being outdoors – even while inside. Opt for organic sheer curtains that allow diffused sunlight to filter through, while maintaining privacy and protection from harsh glare. If your outdoor design permits and you have selected a voile suitable for outdoor use, add sheer curtains to your pergola or fixed structure to enclose your outdoor space, which can work in tandem to block out unwanted sun during the day and to keep the heat in after sundown.

Position mirrors to reflect outdoor views and amplify the sense of space, creating a seamless visual connection between indoors and outdoors. Just be vigilant that the sun does not directly magnify light through the mirror. Use beautiful freestanding heat sources that not only make the experience of outdoor living comfortable during colder periods but also create the perfect ambience that brings your design to life at night.

Think of your outdoor mood lighting, just as you would do with your indoor design. Hidden and dimmable LED lighting, firepits and enclosed freestanding glass fires are perfect for this and with the use of central and perimeter fires in harmony, you can combat those cold spots. Pair these with some practical fixed wall heaters that will ensure you can use the space all year round.

Designing an indoor/outdoor space is about creating a sanctuary where you can relax, unwind, and connect with nature. By considering my four key elements, you can transform your living spaces into a beautiful seamless blend of the indoors and outdoors. So, as summer approaches, embrace the opportunity to create a harmonious retreat that invites you to bask in the splendour of the great outdoors, from the comfort of your own home.
