As the days grow longer and the evenings warmer, embrace the beauty of summer by hosting a gathering outdoors. Whether it's a sunny brunch or a twilight dinner party, a well-designed tablescape can transform an outdoor space into a stylish, inviting haven. Simply put, a tablespace is an artfully arranged table setting that enhances the dining experience, combining functionality with aesthetic appeal

Let me guide you through creating the perfect outdoor summer tablescape, with tips on how to tailor your setting for different occasions.

Understanding the basics

A successful tablescape is a harmonious blend of several elements: height, length, colour, and texture. These components work together to create a cohesive look that reflects the mood of the event. When planning your tablescape, start by considering the type of occasion you’re hosting. Is it a casual afternoon tea, an elegant dinner, or a festive garden party? Each scenario requires a different approach.

Choosing the right table

The foundation of any tablescape is the table itself. For outdoor settings, consider the material and size. A wooden table offers a rustic charm, while a metal or glass table can provide a sleek, modern look. My personal favourite is a stone-top table; it not only elevates any outdoor dining space catering to contemporary and rustic organic looks alike, but will also stand the test of our transient climate. Make sure the table is large enough to accommodate guests comfortably, with enough space for serving dishes and decorations.

Expert nugget: The key is to opt for a wider than standard tabletop and if you are going bespoke then start at 120cm upwards if your floor space allows.

Playing with height

Now your table is finalised, let’s look at the table space itself. Incorporating varying heights into your tablescape adds visual interest and dynamism. Start with a centrepiece as the focal point. For a summer gathering, this could be a vase filled with fresh, seasonal flowers like peonies or roses. I adore birds of paradise, it not only adds height, but it also injects luxury and exotic charm while connecting with any outdoor setting through its orange and green hues. Complement the centrepiece with tall, glass, candle holders, and tiered serving trays. These elements enhance the aesthetic and serve practical purposes, such as providing lighting for evening events and being wind-resistant and child-friendly.

Expert nugget: Use candle holders of different heights to create a layered effect and ensure the candle is at least 10cm shorter than the top of the holder. Opt for citronella candles to keep the bugs at bay while adding a pleasant fragrance.

Embracing colour

Summer is the perfect season to experiment with bright, vibrant colours. Even if you’re more of a neutral soul, this is a way to experience colour without committing to it long-term and you are in control of where and how much you add. Choose a palette that complements your outdoor setting and reflects the theme of your event. For a garden party, consider floral-inspired hues such as muted pinks, rustic greens, and yellows. For a more sophisticated and themed look, shades of blue paired with white can evoke a coastal vibe and take you right back to your favourite destination.

Incorporate these colours through table linens, napkins, and dinnerware. Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns – florals with stripes or geometrics can create a playful yet elegant atmosphere.

Expert nugget: Layer different tablecloths or runners to add depth and interest. A simple white tablecloth topped with a colourful runner can create a striking contrast or if you have a stunning stone tabletop, use the runner alone to showcase the beauty of the stone.

Adding texture

Texture plays a crucial role in adding warmth and dimension to your tablescape. If you are seeking a more organic look, use natural materials such as woven placemats, stone chargers and linen napkins to create a tactile experience. For understated glamour, consider agate placemats and textured glass chargers. These elements enhance the sensory appeal of your table setting.

Consider adding textured elements through your centrepieces as well. Incorporate natural elements such as branches, or marble stone balls, to complement the outdoor environment.

Expert nugget: Don’t forget the napkin rings. Coral napkin rings are perfect for all settings, set the tone before serving, and are tactile and striking.

Personal touches

Personalisation is key to creating a memorable tablescape. Add name cards and personalised menus to make your guests feel special and to enable conversation. Small, thoughtful details such as hand-tied napkins with your guest's favourite flower, can add a bespoke touch.

Expert nugget: If budget allows then instead of name cards, have personalised sketches of each guest created and let them find their seat through their very own alluring sketch.

Different looks for different occasions

1. Casual Brunch

Opt for a relaxed, modern bohemian look with understated tableware, colourful glassware, and wildflower arrangements. Use a mix of seat cushions and throws on seating areas to create a cosy, informal atmosphere.

2. Elegant Dinner

Choose a neutral scheme with one or two accent colours. Use crystal glassware, fine china and elegant yet exotic floral arrangements. Add ambient lighting through candles in glass holders to create a magical evening setting.

3. Garden Party

Embrace the natural beauty of your garden with a floral-themed tablescape. Use vintage tableware, pastel-coloured linens, and plenty of fresh flowers. Incorporate garden elements such as potted plants or even a small herb garden as part of your centrepiece.

Expert nugget: For a seamless transition from day to night, fill your candle holders with flowers at the top and then when night falls, take the top flowers out and light the candles. If you are stuck for time, use battery-operated, flickering sensor-flame candles, so once you lift the flowers the candles will automatically come on and, voila! your perfect night setting begins.

Creating the perfect outdoor summer tablescape is all about blending functionality with beauty. By playing with height, colour, and texture, and adding personal touches, you can design a setting that not only looks stunning but also enhances your guests' experience. Remember, the key is to reflect the mood of your event and let your creativity shine. With my tips, your outdoor gatherings will be the highlight of the summer, leaving your guests with lasting memories of your impeccable style and hospitality.
