Make sure the table is large enough to accommodate guests comfortably, with enough space for serving dishes and decorations.
Expert nugget: The key is to opt for a wider than standard tabletop and if you are going bespoke then start at 120cm upwards if your floor space allows.
Playing with height
Now your table is finalised, let’s look at the table space itself. Incorporating varying heights into your tablescape adds visual interest and dynamism. Start with a centrepiece as the focal point. For a summer gathering, this could be a vase filled with fresh, seasonal flowers like peonies or roses. I adore birds of paradise, it not only adds height, but it also injects luxury and exotic charm while connecting with any outdoor setting through its orange and green hues. Complement the centrepiece with tall, glass, candle holders, and tiered serving trays. These elements enhance the aesthetic and serve practical purposes, such as providing lighting for evening events and being wind-resistant and child-friendly.
Expert nugget: Use candle holders of different heights to create a layered effect and ensure the candle is at least 10cm shorter than the top of the holder. Opt for citronella candles to keep the bugs at bay while adding a pleasant fragrance.
Embracing colour
Summer is the perfect season to experiment with bright, vibrant colours. Even if you’re more of a neutral soul, this is a way to experience colour without committing to it long-term and you are in control of where and how much you add. Choose a palette that complements your outdoor setting and reflects the theme of your event. For a garden party, consider floral-inspired hues such as muted pinks, rustic greens, and yellows. For a more sophisticated and themed look, shades of blue paired with white can evoke a coastal vibe and take you right back to your favourite destination.
Incorporate these colours through table linens, napkins, and dinnerware. Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns – florals with stripes or geometrics can create a playful yet elegant atmosphere.
Expert nugget: Layer different tablecloths or runners to add depth and interest. A simple white tablecloth topped with a colourful runner can create a striking contrast or if you have a stunning stone tabletop, use the runner alone to showcase the beauty of the stone.
