John Flynn Opticians have unveiled an exciting new treatment for dry eye conditions.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a safe, non-invasive and painless treatment for Dry Eye disease and Dry Age-related Macular Degeneration (Dry AMD).

This treatment has revolutionised the outcomes for those living with these common conditions – one in five people worldwide suffer from Dry Eye, and Dry AMD is the leading cause of poor central vision for people in their later years.

Dr Sheeraz Janjua from John Flynn Opticians unveils the details of these treatments and how they can improve people’s lives.

Great British Life:

Improving Dry Eye Disease

Dry Eye can be an extremely irritating condition that usually impacts both of your eyes – continuously making them feel painful, dry and irritated. “Over 5 per cent of women over the age of 40 live with this condition, and over 90 per cent of menopausal women are as well,” reveals Dr Janjua.

“Unfortunately, this condition has become more common amongst all genders and ages due to environmental factors, use of cosmetics and medications, excessive screen use, as well as certain underlying conditions.

“Our treatment is known as Intense Pulsating Light (IPL) and Low Light Level Therapy (LLLT) - both of which utilise PBM. IPL uses thermal pulses to stimulate your Meibomian glands and LLLT uses a specific wavelength of light to gently heat the eyelids. This revolutionary treatment helps the glands to work properly – stabilising and improving the oily layer of the tear film, providing immediate relief from symptoms!”

Whilst Dry Eye Disease is often a symptom of getting older, there’s no need to suffer discomfort with a painless, non-invasive treatment available at your local opticians.

A safe process for Dry AMD

AMD presents a major challenge to eye health globally - as populations age across the world, the prevalence of this condition increases. Predicted to increase by 20 per cent between 2020 and 2030, it’s crucial that people living with this condition have access to suitable treatments.

“The retina is the light-sensitive area at the rear of the eye, and its central part, responsible for visual detail, is the macular,” explains Dr Janjua. “In Dry AMD, the macula develops defects which cause blurring and darkening of central vision, making it difficult to see detail and preventing activities such as driving, reading, watching TV and more.

“Our treatment for Dry AMD is completely safe and painless, and has been fully approved under UK and European directives. PBM uses low levels of red, yellow and infra-red light to stimulate the macula by energising and producing oxygen for cell repair.”

“If you have difficulty with your vision or have been diagnosed with Dry AMD, this treatment can help to improve your eyesight and enjoy your favourite activities once again.”
