Theydon Oak, Coopersale, Epping

Sometimes, all you want for the perfect family meal out is somewhere warm and welcoming that offers great food and has plenty to keep the kids busy. That’s where a traditional village pub like Theydon Oak really comes into its own. It’s set in a conservation area, dates from the 18th century and landlords Iain and Stacey have been running it for over ten years as a hostelry with a heart – the sort of place you can expect a friendly ‘hello’ the moment you reach the bar, with horse brasses on the wall and wood-burning stoves to keep visitors cosy in the winter. But we’re all about summer now – and there’s an award-winning garden here, too; a sun-trap with plenty of seating, so you can make the most of warm weather with a pint of real ale in your hand (Theydon Oak prides itself in showcasing some of the best local ales around) and something tasty from the seasonal barbecue menu. Best of all for those with children is the all-weather play area, meaning you can relax while the kids expend some of their energy on the swings and slides, before tucking into their own special menu – local sausage and mash, perhaps, or mac ‘n’ cheese. How about the adults? They can choose a baguette, fishfinger sandwich or ploughman’s from the bar menu, or plump for one of the speciality 30-day-aged prime Scottish steaks, skate or jerk chicken from the a la carte. Hearty trad puddings include chocolate brownies or sticky toffee pudding plus ice-creams galore. Sunday roasts and seasonal specials are on offer, too, and good wine list compliments the ale selection.

With events throughout the year, and a real community feel, Theydon Oak serves the sort of food in the sort of atmosphere that makes you feel right at home – just what you want from a good, local pub.
