A family home at Eccleston that’s beautiful inside and out and is ideal for entertaining

THE VENDORS SAY:

When was the house built?

Ours was one of five houses commissioned by a farmer (who is one of the neighbours) and built in 1990.

How long have you lived in the house?

We moved into the property in the spring of 2006. We have had 18 happy years here.

What first attracted you to it?

To find such a solidly built house, which afforded privacy in a quiet cul-de-sac, just a short walk from the village centre ticked all the boxes for us.

How have you changed in the house?

When we bought the house, although structurally sound, it felt unloved. We wanted to inject some life into a potentially beautiful family home. The house has evolved over the years.

A major job was re-glazing the entire property; the patio doors on both the lounge and the snug have really added character to the house. It’s funny how one thing leads to another - we put fitted furniture in the master bedroom and then moved on to completely refiguring the en-suite. We were so impressed with the result that we got the company to do the downstairs cloakroom at the same time.

Putting a bespoke office in the fifth double bedroom has made excellent use of the space. There is so much storage space. We spent a great deal of time with the designer when we planned the kitchen and utility room. I wanted to create a kitchen which not only looked good, but was practical on a day-to-day basis, and it had to include an eating area. I love how the granite worktop opens out into a round table which can seat five. It is all very streamlined and there's loads of storage space.

Sourcing the living flame fire and surround in the lounge took some time, but the result is lovely. It is such a welcoming sight and is a beautiful looking piece. I think the thing which has created the most impact was replacing all the mahogany doors and staircase with solid oak and glass. It has really opened the hall, landing and stairs up, giving it a light and airy feel. We chose to add some unusual glass panels to the downstairs doors too.

What will you miss most about the house?

Well, apart from our lovely neighbours, I will probably miss the large dining room the most. We have had so many family and friends get-togethers in there over the years – and so many memories. We have even hosted Come Dine With Me!

Describe the garden:

After 18 years we have a nice mature garden both at the front and back of the house. Each season we have different plants and shrubs coming to life. From the spring camellias and azaleas, on to rhododendrons, hydrangeas, and perennial flowers and finishing with the vibrant berries on the pyracantha, there is always something to admire. We put an Indian stone patio across the full width of the back garden to make full use of the south facing garden. It is a perfect spot for entertaining or simply relaxing.
