Why the locals love living in Diss in Norfolk

While many people visit Cromer and Wells for its beaches and Norwich for dining and nightlife, south Norfolk also has plenty to offer.

One of its major towns is Diss and despite having a population of around 10,000 in the 2021 census it is often overlooked.

With this in mind, we asked the members of the Diss Community Noticeboard Facebook group what they love about where they live and the things that make it stand out.

1. A jam-packed calendar of events

Many locals commented on how much they loved the variety of events put on throughout the year.

Birgitta Kenyon said that Diss Town Council "really makes an effort with public events", ranging from a party for King Charles III's coronation in May to the carnival coming up this Sunday, June 11 with a Hollywood theme.

Other upcoming highlights mentioned, organised by community groups, include Armed Forces Day on June 24 and Ukelele Day on July 15.

2. Diss Park and Mere

If there is one thing that defines the town of Diss it is the mysterious body of water known as the Mere and according to ancient folklore, it was formed in the crater of an extinct volcano.

However, geology suggests it was instead due to a glacier retreat back in the last Ice Age.

Whatever its origin, the six-acre mere and adjoining park are enjoyed by the whole community, with picnic benches, a kiosk selling snacks and ice creams and children's play equipment.

3. Vibrant independent shops

You don't just have to visit Norwich to shop from locally-owned brands and many members of the Facebook group raved about Designermakers21 in St Nicholas Street, which is a crafts centre and gallery that also holds workshops.

Mandy Cook commented on the Diss Facebook group: "I have never found anything like this elsewhere."

Another local favourite in the same street is Harriet's Home and Garden, which also boasts a pretty pink cake parlour.

4. Great pubs to visit

Diss and the surrounding areas are home to some truly great pubs, such as The Cock Inn in Denmark Street which overlooks Fair Green and offers a great selection of beers and real ales.

It has also recently been hosting food pop-ups from the likes of Pommarola Pizza Gardens and Dirty Fryer Boys.

The Burston Crown, on the outskirts of the town, dates back to the 16th century with many original features and it has just got new owners, who are hosting quizzes and barbecue nights.
