LOCAL INTEREST

Hove is a town on the south coast of England, immediately to the west of its larger neighbour Brighton

'Hove, actually' is a well-known retort given by residents of Hove, (usually in jest), in response to the common question as to whether they live in Brighton. They feel, according to local myth, that this helps them to maintain a distinction with their less genteel neighbour. It is said that the once-local resident, actor Laurence Olivier, coined the phrase, but this is unconfirmed. In the 1990s Hove Borough Council used the slogan “Hove, Actually” to promote the town as a tourist destination.
